Re: On UN initiative to assist in the current GRP-MILF Peace Talks PDF Print E-mail

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), as a matter of policy, firmly valued the wisdom of conducting dialogues as a means to reach a political solution, which is a legacy of the late MILF Chairman Salamat Hashim, who clarified in a message to the freedom fighters: "We have adopted a moderate policy with regards to the political aspects of our struggle to prove our sincerity in finding a political solution to the problem." In fact, the present leadership of the MILF has pledged to continue the policies and programs left by its predecessor.

Significantly, a United Nations (UN) peace initiative as proposed by Secretary-General Kofi Annan to assist in the current peace talks between the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) is a welcome development. This is not to say, however, that an unjust peace is better than a just war. A pacific means of resolving conflict is thus listed as priority in the MILF political agenda, and the Front has pursued this means actively through the good offices of friendly states and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), and lately under the auspices of the governments of Malaysia and Libya.

Presently, GRP-MILF Peace Talks are in progress under the active facilitation of the Government of Malaysia. The involvement of the international communities under the auspices of the UN to assist in the peace process brings message of our renewed hope for the implementation of all peace agreements/ commitments entered into by the GRP and the MILF for the attainment of a just, lasting and comprehensive political solution to the armed conflicts and the Bangsamoro problem.
