SHARIFF AGUAK, MAGUINDANAO – In their effort to educate parents and caregivers on child-rearing practices, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), along with other provincial line agencies, launched the Early Child Care and Development (ECCD)-School-on-the-Air (SOA) Monday in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao. ECCD-SOA or “Usapang Makabata” aims to inform parents and caregivers about the importance of the early childhood years, of proper and developmentally-appropriate care-giving practices, and of how to nurture the overall development of their children. It will be operated through a radio program every Monday and Tuesday, 12:00-1:00 pm to kick off on October 6, 2003 featuring 24 episodes of early childhood care to be handled by the Bureau of Public Information-ARMM. ECCD-SOA is one of the major projects carried out by the UNICEF in its fifth leg of Country Program for Children (CPC) in coordination with the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, Education, Health, and Interior and Local Government and the Provincial Planning and Development Office-Maguindanao in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao . Maguindanao Governor Datu Andal Ampatuan, in his message read by Datu Ali Abpi, thanked the ARMM line agencies for carrying out such initiatives which will “shape good citizens of tomorrow”. The governor also urged the parents to become the immediate example of their children as well the principal teacher during the early stages of children’s learning. The ARMM pursues strong advocacy on ECCD in the municipal and barangay levels, otherwise known as the Republic Act 8980, which attends to the children’s basic needs on “health, nutrition, and early education and social services programs to enhance their optimum growth and development.” “With ECCD, we, parents, can come up with an intervention guidance for our children thus we must grab the opportunity of learning all these, which is a product of research experts,” said Social and Welfare Secretary Bainon Karon in her message. It “will reconcile parent-child relationship and shape better children of tomorrow,” Karon added. Simultaneously held in the entire region is the Family Week celebration exemplified by the theme “WOW Pamilyang Pilipino!” Ang Tahanan: Kanlungan ng Kultura at Kalinangan participated in by all ARMM line agencies. The author is an Information Officer of the Bureau of Public Information-ARMM. End.
