The Young Muslim Professionals helped organized a Leadership training Seminar in Sulu on March 3, 2003. The following is a news story about the accomplishments of the LTS.

Sulu governor Yusop Jikiri called on Tausug youth leaders to "take notice of the innumerable challenges that a Muslim leader faces today." "Today aside from the war on terror, we are waging another war against poverty, hunger and disease," his speech read by Provincial Administrator Iriles Ladjjabasal before 40 select youths in a pioneering Leadership Training Seminar (LTS) held on March 1 and 2 at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Session Building, Jolo.

Jikiri cited the "sad reality" of Muslims countries being "economically and socially depressed." Localizing the analysis, he added that "5 out of the 19 poorest of the poor provinces in the Philippines are inhabited by Muslims." Sulu is one of the 5 provinces mentioned.

Linking it to a lack of development initiatives from Muslim themselves, Jikiri cited problems to be addressed to include health services, roads, bridges and educational facilities which are "wanting in Muslim areas."

To address this, a "right formula" in leadership must be used, he said. He then exhorted the Tausug youth to be the "kind of leaders that our people need." "We are a unique tribe. And we have cultural idiosyncracies. All of these would require a particular style of leadership." Jikiri cited the traits of courage, knowledge and love for people as requisites for leadership.

The Tausug of Lupah Sug or Sulu are popularly perceived to be warriors. The revolutionary movement, MNLF, was led by Tausugs.

The LTS was organized by the Young Moro Professionals Network, the Philippine Councilor's League-Sulu headed by Atty. Edilwasif Baddiri, the Provincial Government headed by Governor Yusop Jikiri and the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation headed by Rashida Loong.

Baddiri, in his remarks, cited the program's objective which is to help the "next generation of Tausug youth become more responsible leaders."

End.
