To many Muslims, Angelo Reyes was no angel. Some received the news of his resignation by saying "Allahu Akbar" (God is great), some said it was "karma," others said "matagal na dapat yan" (It was long coming).
Reyes is popularly known to be one of those who encouraged the all-out-war in Central Mindanao, particularly the Pikit hostilities, which started on the eve of a Muslim religious holiday, Eidul Adha. He is also seen as one of the "hawks" in the President's circle of security advisers, and who was not supportive of the peace process between the government and the MILF. Worse, he has always been supportive of a militaristic solution for peace in Mindanao.
A text brigade right after the announcement Thursday afternoon of Reyes' resignation was circulated around Muslim communities. "This is a victory for the Muslims," said Drieza Lininding of the Coalition of the Moro Youth Movements. "This is an aftermath of a letter (from a Muslim leader) to the President requesting such," said ARMM social Fund Director Norhata Alonto. "Poetic justice. He has to answer for his sins to the Bangsamoro people," said Atty. Musib Buat, member of the legal group of the MILF panel in the peace talks. End.
