Indeed, “stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage!” Paradoxical it may seem, former ARMM Governor and MNLF Chairman Nur “Maas” Pining Misuari leads the pack of willing slaves for Sulu Raayat (populace or citizenry) as an independent gubernatorial candidate for Sulu this May 10, 2004 National Elections.

Incumbent Sulu Governor Yusop H. Jikiri a.k.a. “Chief”, runs again for a second term under LAKAS-CMD, along with LAKAS-CMD candidate Benjamin T. Loong, Independent candidate Kadra A. Masihul, Abdusakur M. Tan of PMP, and Ramon A. Gonzales with Sukarno A. Sappayani of KBL.

It shall be a historical electoral face-off between MNLF comrades Chief and Maas whose noble character both command respect, love and mercy from their respective Moro brethren, kith and kin.

Eyeing his second term as Sulu Vice-Governor is current Vice-Gov. Abdel S. Anni (LAKAS-CMD) belonging to the renowned Anni-socio-politico clan, who is challenged by his own cousin under LAKAS-CMD Nur-Ana “Lady Ann” I. Sahidulla, who is currently Mayor of Tongkil. Other challengers of Vice-Gov. Anni are independent Samsula J. Adju (a former Sulu MSU-Chancellor), Basaron M. Burahan (PMP), and Badria H. Samain (KBL).

Present Congressman-1st District, Rep Hussin U. Amin who has staunchly championed the Sulu Raayat’s cause, runs under LAKAS and is opposed by five other candidates: Salipada A. Amir Hussin (LDP), Alvarez S. Isnaji (KAMPI), Julasri S. Kastiri (PIBID), Edgar M. Malli (Aksyon Demokratiko), and Nabil A. Tan (LDP).

Current Congressman of Second District, Rep. Abdul Munir M. Arbison of LAKAS-CMD vies for a second term. Rep. Arbison whose political clout, clan and reputation as innovative community developer is prominent in Luuk, is challenged by DILG-ASEC Abraham S. Iribani (REFORMA-LM), fellow LAKAS-CMD Gafor Abdurajak, Utal H. Gadjali of KBL (KNP), and Asani Sayah Tammang of NPC.

Thirty candidates grapple for four Board Member seats allotted to the First District. Among them are: YMP member Edilwasif T. Baddiri, Barlie S. Nahudan, Den-Rashier I. Salim, Rizal D. Tingkahan all of LAKAS-CMD; Indah Kumalah U. Amin, Caluang Awali (PIBID); Abduhari Hussin, Dammang Kamlian, and Yusop Gulam of Aksyon-Demokratiko; Ustadz Habier H. Mohammad (MUSHAWARA), Abraham Sakili (LDP) and other independent candidates as well as those from PORMA-LM, PDR-LM, PDSP, AD and PMP.

On the other hand, 27 candidates contend for four Board member seats allotted for the Second District. Among them are: Abraham Daud, Panglima Estino, Mayor Abdulkadil Estino, Hector Buclao, Renden Abdurajak, Hji Onnih T. Ammad, Mohammad Nur Sitin, Elcid Sangkula Mundoc of LAKAS-CMD; Abdulsali Abdulhalim and Nouh Daiman of REFORMA-LM; Jamar Kulayan, Javier Sakandal and Sarri Angan of PMP; and the lone independent woman candidate, former public school teacher Nur Aini Harkiya Indanan of Lugus, Tapul, Siasi.

Willing Public Slaves (or in Tausug vernacular “Saddiya- Banyaga Sin Raayat”) these candidates may all be, still they need the benedictory mandate of the Sulu voting populace. Allah shall ultimately destine, Qadar’ Allah!
