Manila - Thousands of Muslims converged for the Eidul adha prayers at major mosques and public prayer places 6 am. Streamers by politicians and organizations and balloons with the words PEACE and EIDUL MUBARAK greeted men and women garbed in mokna (long head gears) carrying their prayer mats at Luneta Park grandstand, one of the major congregations in Manila every Islamic holiday.

The World Social Forum (WSF) in Mumbai with its theme "Another World is Possible" gathered prominent activists and intellectuals across the world including the only and first Muslim Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi, who appeared at the opening rites with youthful writer Ayudhanat Roy and former Indian Prime Minister VP Singh.

It was a liberating picture to see – Arabs in their jeans, unveiled women in sawalls, speaking both in Arabic and English and criticizing (in their traditional shouting volume) their own. Saying the Arab League (established in 1947) has failed to face the challenge of Israel, one panelist Abdulnabi Alekry articulated, “The Arab failure in development, good governance, unification, human rights, modernization, ending the Palestinian plight and curbing Israeli expansion is clear,” Alekry pointed out at the “Obstacles to Development in the Middle East” workshop at the World Social Forum in Mumbai, India on Jan. 19. Alekry also compared Arab states to European “successes in that the latter had democracy and popular participation.”.

Some 20 local rallyists in their saris and khudduts were already sloganeering for the Dalit’s (untouchables) cause and it was only registration time at the World Social Forum at Mumbai on January 15. I was on a line, feeling the Indian heat and dust along with Caucasians, who might have been as excited as I to attend THE big event of the NGO world. After all, this was the perceived people’s counterpart of the World Economic Forum being held simultaneously miles away at Davos Switzerland. A paradox of the North and South divide – the former hosting prime ministers and other heads of state, the latter spoken to be NGO leaders and masses.

If it's Chinese New Year, the more than a million Muslim pilgrims also face a new life ahead as they end the Hajj season in Mecca this week and return back to their countries. Pilgrims from all over the world having worn white (as a symbolism of purity) and trekked Mecca's Kaaba (black stone) underwent a month of rituals as part of the once-in-a-lifetime obligation of a Muslim. The other pillars/duties are Shahada (declaration there is one God and Muhammad a messenger), prayer, charity, and fasting.
