The countdown to fasting begins. The Islamic calendar is now on the Shaaban month, a month before the holy month of Ramadhan commences approximately on October 26. Shaaban is a time when it is also encouraged to fast on selected dates as an optional act. This is the period when prayer and fasting was made mandatory acts on Muslims. In Islamic history, the Qibla was transferred from the Farthest Mosque in Mecca to the Qibla currently during this month .

Two Tausug analysts expressed optimism over the 3-decade peace talks between the government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) and Moro rebels (represented by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and Moro National Liberation Front). At the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) conflict-resolution workshops held last August 28-September 1 and September 8-11 at the Asian Institute of Managament, former senator Santanina Rasul and Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Abraham Iribani analyzed the prospects for peace. |

Using the Malaysian model of what a "modern Muslim country should be like," Malaysian government officials and technocrats, led by Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Badawi called for Muslim unity among Muslim countries.
In a speech read by the Defense Minister at the International Conference of Muslim Young Leaders (ICMYL) held at the Renaissance, Kuala Lumpur last Sept. 13-16, Badawi stated the need for an "objective evaluation of the state of the Muslim world," even as he asked to "listen to the frustrations of the youth." Delegates came from 80 countries, including representatives from East Timor, Iraq and the United States and Senior Ministers of Bangladesh and Syria. The 4-man Philippine delegation was led by ARMM Trade Secretary Ishak Mastura. Observers from the International Islamic University-Malaysia and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, among other institutes came. Internation media outfit BBC and as well as the local media covered the event. |

Mixed reactions from Muslim leaders greeted the appointment of Eduardo Ermita as defense secretary. A veteran of the peace talks, Ermita formerly presidential adviser of the peace process, has been involved in the GRP-MNLF peace talks since MNLF chairperson Nur Misuari's time.
