Breaking the walls against Muslim women

The topic, Women in Islam drew lively discussion in the National Muslim Youth Summit held last weekend at the academic institution, Asian Institute of Management (AIM). Some participants, majority of who were women, asked on tips on how to draw more women involvement in community-building. YMPN Moro Fund chairperson John Musa cited that by the network’s democratic nature, its chairpersons have been women – Jehanne Mutin in 2000, Ayesah Abubakar in 2002 and Baibon Sanguid in 2003. The three are Maranao, Maguindanaons respectively.

Hajj or pilgrimage takes place each year between the eighth and the 13th days of Dhu al-Hijjah, (this year between Jan 30-Feb 4, 2004) the 12th month of the Muslim lunar calendar. Its first rite is the donning of the ihram.The donning of the ihram(seamless garment donned by pilgrims) is accompanied by the primary invocation of the hajj, the talbiyah:

 
Datumanong leaves DOJ

The only Muslim Cabinet member Simeon Datumanong leaves the Department of Justice (DOJ) effective today, Tuesday ending almost a year of service to run for Congess in the 2nd district of Maguindanao. In high spirits, he met the DOJ press corps at lunch at the DOJ grounds to bid his farewell.

Islam and sex ? MTV? Jeans and veiling? Was I hearing right? A workshop group at the Young Moro Professionals General Assembly was talking of a taboo topic – “Can’t Muslims have sex education?” posed a feisty unveiled Tausug, Fatima Alian of the Women’s Studies Center of the Western Mindanao State University in Zamboanga City. Her workshop group was eclectic - facilitated by a conservative Islamic radio announcer, a fashionista from the Office on Muslim Affairs and an Atenean colegiala who questioned the elder’s views of modernization.
 
Another Moro Leader Passes Away

One of founding members of the Moro revolutionary movement, Dr. Salih Loong passed away from liver cirrhosis December 6, 6:30 pm at the Western Mindanao Medical Center, Zamboanga City.
 
ARMM Governor says ARMM budget lopsided

Nur Misuari had it better. The former ARMM governor’s regional budget of 14 billion is far more than the currently approved 5.8 billion peso budget. “We cannot call this our budget,” says ARMM governor Parouk Hussin even as he cited that the Moro areas need more help than the other regions. “We are the poorest, most illiterate, depressed (region) and where (many of) the criminals are.”
