Another Moro Leader passes away - Macapanton Yahya Abbas at 60

Just barely two months after MILF chairman Salamat Hashim’s death, another founding member of the Bangsamoro movement passed away last night. Founding chairman of the Bangsamoro Youth Movement in Manila, now Department of Education Undersecretary, Macapanton Yahya Abbas, 60, of Lanao del Sur passed away from cardiac arrest at the Makati Medical Center, Wednesday night. He is survived by his wife, Ms. Baby Abbas of Maigo, Lanao del Norte and six children, one of who is the student regent of the Mindanao State University.

"We (Muslims) must have the courage to say NO," says an international expert on Islam and democracy on the topic of terrorism. Two years after the 9/11 World Trade Center attack blamed on Muslim extremists, Muslim thinkers are grappling with a backlash and curiosity from the Western world. Two American Muslim analysts came to Manila to talk on the themes “Islam and Democracy” in a series of roundtable discussions co-organized by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) and the Philippine Council for Islam and Democracy on September 12, 2003.

 
MUSLIM YOUNG LEADERS CONFRONT UMMAH CHALLENGES

Amidst the frustration and poverty of Muslim youths in many parts of the world, Muslim young leaders converged in Kuala Lumpur to forge consensus on economic and education platforms in the International Conference of Muslim Young Leaders at the Renaissance Hotel on September 14-16. Describing the event to be the "first ever organized in the history of the Islamic world, with representatives from 60 countries (47 of whom are OIC countries and the rest, with Muslim minorities)," convenor group, Foundation of Activators of a Vision chair Dr. Mohammad Nur Abdullah welcomed the participants "who are the second echelon in leadership." Two among the 100 participants are the Ministers of Bangladesh and Syria.

 
ARMM HEIGHTENS HRD

COTABATO CITY - The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) is boosting human resource development (HRD) to professionalize its manpower and improve the level of civil service performance in the region.

Engr. Bai Intan Ampatuan, Chief of the Social Development Division of the Regional Planning Development Office, said the ARMM Integrated Capability Building Program is expected to be approved and funded by the National Economic Development Authority and Japan International Cooperation Agency, respectively.

 
FVR TO BE INVITED SPEAKER FOR ISLAM AND DEMOCRACY ROUNDTABLE

Two international experts on the topics Islam and democracy will be panelists to the 1st Philippine forum on Islam and Democracy, with former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos to be invited as reactor on September 11, 9-2 pm at the Asian Institute of Management in Makati City. Another forum is scheduled at the UP Institute of Islamic Studies later at 2pm.

 
ELECTRICITY JAM IN LANAO DEL SUR ASSAILED

MARAWI CITY – Consumers and consumer groups in Lanao del Sur consisting of the Muslim Mindanao Consumers Association and the Ranao Movement of Consumers expressed big frustration at the high cost of electricity in their province despite the fact that the main power source in Mindanao, NAPOCOR Power Plants Agus I & II, are in Lanao del Sur.
